Woman killed after car breaks down on I-20 identified
SOUTH FULTON, Ga. - A woman is dead after she was struck on Interstate 20 east near the Fulton Industrial Boulevard exit on Monday morning.
According to the South Fulton Police Department, she was waiting for her car to be loaded onto a tow truck shortly before 5 a.m. Monday when she was fatally injured.
The SFPD Traffic Unit is investigating the incident. Police say that the driver who struck her stayed on the scene and suffered minor injuries, along with a passenger in the car that struck the woman.
"This accident happened about 4:45 this morning on I-20 eastbound near, or just before, the Fulton Industrial Boulevard exit. It is a tragedy," said Lt. Jubal Rogers, with the South Fulton Police Department.
Traffic cameras captured the scene as several lanes remained closed near Six Flags as police investigated. "The woman who was killed, she was on the shoulder. The tow truck was loading her vehicle on the shoulder. So, the vehicle that did strike her, like I said, we're still trying to work out the details, but I just have to stress the importance of making sure motorists move over for emergency vehicles and tow trucks," said Lieutenant Rogers.
Rogers says the driver of the car and a passenger were injured but are expected to be OK.
Police have not charged the driver as their investigation continues. "We just want to urge all of the drivers to be vigilant. Just be cognizant," said Rogers.
The woman was identified by officials on Tuesday as 43-year-old Melody Cobun.
