13-year-old boy shot in head after police say he, friends were playing with gun

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. - Fulton County Police are investigating the shooting of a 13-year-old boy.  Detectives say it happened at the Sierra Townhome Apartments on Godby Road Friday afternoon. 

Investigators spent hours at the apartment complex Friday. Police say a small group of boys were inside one of the apartments playing with a gun. The gun went off hitting the 13-year-old in the head. 

Police are trying to determine if it was an accident or if someone intentionally shot the boy.  They also want to know how the kids got their hands on the gun and if there were any adults in the apartment at the time. The teen was rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital.

Shontavius Smith says she just saw the 13-year-old boy before the shooting. "I went over there to get my kid and he said 'hey what's up?' and we talked for a bit, then like 20 minutes later I heard he had been shot," said Smith.   

Now she's praying he'll make a full recovery.  "I just want o tell him to keep his head up and stay strong," said Smith.
