Atlanta Police launch investigation of possible sexual assault

Atlanta Police have confirmed they've launched an investigation into the possible sexual assault of a woman inside a Midtown nightclub. What's worse, police say the assault may have been streamed live on Facebook.

Dozens of FOX 5 Atlanta viewers and people from across the country have shared the shocking video they saw.

Atlanta police confirm they've opened an investigation after a video was posted, allegedly showing a sexual assault.

The incident reportedly took place at Opera nightclub on Crescent Street in Midtown during a concert Saturday night.

In their statement, Atlanta Police say their Special Victims’ Unit has made contact with the young woman who appears to be assaulted in the video, while others look on, some while holding cell phones, recording the scene.

FOX 5 News attempted to reach Opera nightclub but was unsuccessful. The venue posted a statement of their social media pages Sunday which read in part "The disturbing matter that occurred last night has been brought to our attention, and we are working as diligently as possible in full cooperation with local law enforcement"

Then, early Monday afternoon, the venue added this statement: “At this time we have met with the Atlanta Police Department and have provided them with everything they have requested. We will continue to aid and support their investigation in any way we can. We have been asked to defer any further questions to the Atlanta Police Department Public Affairs Unit.”

In the hours since the alleged assault, the video has been viewed thousands of times.
