Glascock County Sheriff Jeremy Kelley said on Facebook 19-year-old Deputy Joshua Ryer Jr. of Gibson died in a wreck Tuesday. Kelley says Ryer was headed to a youth detention center in Washington, about 45 miles northwest of Augusta when the wreck happened.

A woman in the other car was taken to an Augusta hospital for treatment. There was no word on her name or condition. The Georgia State Patrol is investigating the wreck.

Kelly said Deputy Ryer started Glascock County Sheriff’s Office on Sept. 10, 2018, and wanted to be a federal law enforcement officer.

"He was a great young man and becoming a great officer. He was only with our office a short period of time but he quickly became one of our family members," Kelly said on Facebook. "He will truly be missed but absolutely never will be forgotten."
