An apartment fire late Tuesday night claimed the life of an East Point man.

The blaze broke out before midnight Tuesday in the 1700 block of Vesta Avenue, just inside the East Point city limits near College Park. Firefighters on the scene couldn't say what caused the blaze, but it appeared to be concentrated in the back of the 6-unit apartment building.

Officials said two of the apartments were vacant.

The Red Cross told FOX 5 the man who died was older and lived in the apartment where the fire started.  No other information about him was available on the scene.

The Red Cross is helping at least five people left homeless by the blaze.
