Atlanta Police said it started in northwest Atlanta where Timothy Hood held his ex-girlfriend at gunpoint and took her car. He took off and did not stop for pursuing officers.
The chase ended near Hank Aaron Drive and Milton Avenue SE. There, police said he slammed into a City of Atlanta truck, jumped out of the vehicle, and started opening fire on responding officers. At least one officer opened fire, striking Hood.
“And as the suspect exited the vehicle he began firing at the officer. Luckily, the officer that was involved did everything he was supposed to do. His training kicked in and it saved his life. And then amazingly after the suspect was shot and tried to kill our police officer, Atlanta Police officers arrived and saved his life,” said Deputy Chief Jeff Glazier, Atlanta Police Department.
Hood was rushed to a Grady Memorial in stable condition. Police said he was shot three times.
Investigators are crediting the responding officers with saving his life.
Hood faces charges of aggravated assault and hijacking a motor vehicle.
