Outpouring of support for DeKalb County officer, family after fire
DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. - The family of DeKalb County Police Officer Marty Williams was feeling grateful Friday after a fundraiser organized by his fellow officers at the South DeKalb Police Precinct generated thousands of dollars in donations and literally a room full of clothing, shoes, toiletries and other essential items the family needs to get back on their feet after a devastating house fire.
Donations poured in Friday from people all over metro Atlanta who saw the story about the officer and the six children left homeless by the March 1 fire at their home in Henry County.
Amber Singleton told FOX 5 News she was moved to see so many people would reach out to help her, the officer, their five daughters, and son.
"It's just overwhelming. It's nice to see how strangers will help an officer and a family in need," said Singleton as she stood outside of the police precinct off Candler Road.
It will be weeks before the couple's home is repaired or rebuilt, but they hope to find a rental property in Henry County so they can move their blended family out of the hotel where they have been staying since the fire.
Officer Williams said the outpouring of support, combined with his children's encouraging spirit and positive attitude, keep him and Amber motivated as they rebuild their lives and get back on track.
"All of this feels like just one big hug in the midst of a tragedy. It makes us feel like we can get on the other side of this and eventually make it work," Officer Williams said.
The South DeKalb Police Precinct established a GoFundMe page has been set up to help the family.
