"If you've got a gun, I understand. We all need to protect ourselves, but we also have to keep the guns away to protect our children," said Krystal Smith, a mother four who lives near the apartment where the girl was shot.
LaGrange Police said the child was taken to a nearby hospital. She was then transferred to a hospital in Atlanta in critical condition. Her name has not yet been released.
"Based on what we've discovered so far, it appears to be an accidental shooting, not something intentional. We have a sense of who fired the weapon. But we're not ready to release that just said LaGrange Police Sergeant Robert Kirby. "I can tell you the wound was not self-inflicted," he said to reporters from Atlanta and Columbus during a midday news conference.
Investigators told FOX 5 there were two other children, ages 7 and 2, inside the apartment when the child was shot. The little girl's 26-year-old mother was also there, according to police.
Police said the other children were not injured.
