Man in custody after barricading himself inside Gwinnett County McDonald's

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. - A man has been taken into custody after a SWAT situation at a McDonald's in unincorporated Lawrenceville Tuesday morning. 

Gwinnett County Police were called to the McDonald's on Sugarloaf Parkway around 4:30 a.m. after they say 36-year-old Lawrenceville resident Derrick Hall barricaded himself inside the restaurant's bathroom. Employees told officers they possibly saw the suspect with a knife doing drugs, and when he was asked to leave he fled to the bathroom instead. 

Police worked to get Hall to surrender peacefully, but he made threats to the officers. That's when they activated the SWAT team. 

Officers ended up taking out warrants for Hall for terroristic threats and criminal trespass. Meanwhile, the suspect is accused of opening the restroom door and swinging his knife at the officers. 

Police said Hall caused significant damage to the restroom, which included pulling a urinal off the wall, leading to a broken water pipe. 

At roughly 8:15 a.m., SWAT members deployed gas inside the restaurant to get the suspect to surrender. Shortly after, Hall was taken into custody.

Police say Hall was evaluated at a local hospital, then transported to the Gwinnett County Detention Center.

He has been arrested multiple times in the county, officials said. 

No injuries were reported.
