Friends: Walmart shooting victim survived concentration camps

SNELLVILLE, Ga. - Friends say the man who was shot to death outside of a Snellville Walmart Sunday was a devoted husband and father who came to the United State for a better life.

Snellville Police said a man and his fiancé got into an argument with 49-year-old Fadil Delkic in the parking lot of the Walmart at 1550 Scenic Highway Sunday afternoon.

According to a police news release, 28-year old Troy Hunte and his fiancé had a verbal argument with Delkic when the woman struck Delkic in the face.

Police said Hunte then pulled a handgun from his pocket and shot Delkic once in the chest.

Medics rushed Delkic to Gwinnett Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

The victim’s friends told FOX 5’s Aungelique Proctor Delkic came to the U.S. for a better life after surviving concentration camps in Bosnia.

Snellville Police Detective Jeff Manley said the incident began when Delkic started driving his car out of the parking lot.

According to Manley, the woman was pushing a stroller with her baby inside and thought Delkic drove his vehicle too close to them.

The officer said Delkic got out of his vehicle, the two argued, and the woman hit Delkic in the face.

According to Manley, that's when Hunte shot Delkic.

Witnesses said people started running into the store to get away from the fight. Some shoppers inside thought there was an active shooter in the store.  

"The first thing you think is try to get away from the shooter. So, everyone, everyone panicked," explained Robin Reynolds, who was in the checkout with her children.  "Everybody dropped everything.  They left their carts wherever they were at and just start running."

Karl Rittenberry said he and his family pulled up moments after the shooting to find his daughter's high school volleyball coach performing CPR on Delkic.

"We saw the man laying on the ground," said Rittenberry.  

Police have not confirmed what started the fight, but some witnesses said it began over a parking spot.  

"You see that and hear that all the time, but it's outrageous," said Rittenberry. "Let them have the parking spot and find another one."  

Police investigators, working the Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office, charged Hunte with voluntary manslaughter.

He is being held at the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office.
