Police: Scooter rider struck and killed

A man riding a scooter was struck and killed as he departed the West Lake MARTA station early Friday morning.

Police say they were called to the intersection of West Lake Avenue SW and Browning Street NW just after midnight.

Investigators say a 20-year-old Eric Amis Jr. was riding a Lime scooter when he was struck by a Cadillac as Amis left the MARTA property. The female driver remained on the scene and spoke with investigators, telling police that the scooter appeared at the last second and she tried to avoid him but was unable to stop.

Atlanta Police accident investigators have not yet determined if any charges will be filed.

Amis' family says it is too early to talk about the fatal crash.

Attorney Bruce Hagen advocates for pedestrians and cyclists. He says a deadly accident like this was inevitable.

"There is a lack of facilities to allow for safe space for scooter riders in Atlanta and the state really. Unfortunately, there will be more fatal accidents like this because they are sharing the same road," Hagen remarked.
