Armed suspects carjack, beat Uber driver in Buckhead
ATLANTA - The Atlanta Police Department is on the hunt for one more suspect after an Uber driver was attacked during a violent carjacking Friday morning.
Officers told FOX 5 News the Uber driver was waiting at the corner of East Paces Ferry Road and Maple Drive in Buckhead around 2 a.m. about to pick a ride. That's when a man and a woman with guns ambushed him and demanded him to get out of his car.
The victim spoke with FOX 5 Friday after leaving the hospital. The unidentified man said he suffered a concussion after the duo hit him in the head with a handgun. He said the two then got into his car and took off.
"I am having trouble seeing out of my left eye," the man said. "Even to touch or eat anything, moving my jaw or my teeth, anything, it is just really sore."
APD was able to trace the stolen car on Interstate 75 NB to Interstate 285 using an app on the victim's phone. Officers said the armed robbers exited the freeway near Northside Drive and crashed the stolen car near a Waffle House.
Officers said they arrested a 15-year-old female suspect but the male suspect got away. They added a third individual was with the pair but that person isn't considered a suspect in the crime.
The Uber driver is now represented by local attorney Natanya Brooks who would like Uber to assist the victim in light of this ordeal. The man said he was working for the company to save up money for his wedding next month. But now he has to get his car repaired and pay medical bills.
"Now I have to find something else to do because I'm not going to jeopardize my security or [my fiance's] for a little extra money," he stressed.
Late Friday, Uber sent FOX 5 a statement.
“What this driver experienced is frightening and we’ve reached out to check on his well-being. We will work with police to help with their investigation.”
