Burgers with Buck: Two Urban Licks
ATLANTA - Two Urban Licks has been in Atlanta’s Old Fourth Ward for 14 years. In other words, they were O4W before O4W was cool.
If you haven’t tried “The Burger”, there are 22 reasons why you should. More on that in a second.
First of all, there’s only one featured burger on the menu (hence the name), but that burger is subject to change. Case in point, with hatch chiles in season right now, Executive Chef Michael Bertozzi is using the popular and very limited seasonal delight in the current version of “The Burger”.
One thing is constant, “The Burger” is always made with a substantial, house ground, 100% short rib patty. According to Chef Bertozzi, short rib provides a natural 80/20 ratio (80% lean, 20% fat). Now to the hatch chiles . . . “The Burger” is topped with hatch chile cheese and hatch chile jam to provide just the right amount of kick. They also add shredded lettuce, pickles, thick cut bacon, and smoked mayo to round out a brilliant combination of flavors.
OK, back to those 22 reasons. Chef Bertozzi and his staff grind enough short rib for only 22 burgers a day, and when they are gone . . . they are gone. Gives new meaning to Catch 22. He says it’s rare for their daily burger rationing to last beyond 7:30 PM (which actually works really well for AM news types). In other words, don’t be late!
Believe me, with their delicious selection of wood-fired cuisine, and their wine on tap barrel wall, Two Urban Licks is far from a burger joint, and it’s a really cool place to hang well into the late night. However, if you get there early enough, you owe it to yourself to give “The Burger” a try. Afterward, you can enjoy the beautiful view of downtown Atlanta, and maybe even burn off some of those calories on the Atlanta Beltline which is right outside the door.
