Dorsey Levens Turns Previous Success into New Career

Local football fans will certainly remember the name Dorsey Levens. He set records as a running back for Georgia Tech, and in 1997 he helped the Green Bay Packers win their first Super Bowl in 29 years.

The 45-year-old is now retired, but he's turning the success he once had on the football field into a brand new career. Levens said after he retired from the NFL, he realized his method for working out gave him a huge advantage over other players.

"I lasted eleven years in the NFL where the average is under three years," said Levens. "And I figured, if working out like this is giving me such an advantage, it's going to help a lot of other people."

Two years ago Levens started the "I Am Momentum" program, where he passes on his training strategy to athletes in all kinds of sports. Levens said it doesn't matter what sport you play, building endurance, speed and balance will help you excel.  He believes building strong core muscles helps prevent injury and should be any athlete's top priority.

"We do core work everyday because the core is the most important part of your body," said Levens.

"Certian days we'll do speed.  Certain days we'll do agility work. Certain days we'll do conditioning work. But we incorporate core into every single workout."

Scott Ratliffe is a professional lacrosse player for the Boston Cannons who has been training with Levens for a year.

"It's made a really big impact on my career," said Ratliffe. "This past season I played every single game. I had my first season as an all pro and I really think that's because of the type of training I've been doing. Staying healthy, really good cardio, really good core work, really good balance, all those things combined really led to my success."'

Ratliffe said beyond the physical training, Dorsey has helped him develop the inner strength it takes to succeed.

"He talks to me about leadership, he talks to me about how to be a great athlete," said Ratliffe.  "I think more than anything that's made a huge impact on me."

Levens explained, "We don't care about mistakes. We are going to make mistakes for the rest of our lives.  I tell them, we don't dwell on them, we don't worry about them.  As long as you give me one hundred percent,  I could care less about mistakes.  I always say the people who don't last are the people who get tired of getting tired.  The worst thing that's going to happen is you are going to get tired.  That's it.  You may get really, really tired.  That's as bad as it's going to get. The guys who can hang in there are the guys who are successful."

Levens holds classes for kids and takes on clients of all ages. You'll catch him training people at Life Fit Studio in Dunwoody or at the Forum Athletic Club in Buckhead. He also loves to do workouts at Piedmont Park and on the Chattahoochee River Nature Trail. He says running through the roots and rocks helps athletes develop balance and agility.
