GA groundhog Gen. Beauregard Lee predicts six more weeks of winter

ATLANTA - Friday, February 2, is Groundhog Day, and furry forecasters across the United States have determined there will be six more weeks of winter. 

Georgia's official weather prognosticator, a groundhog named General Beauregard Lee, gave his prediction Friday morning from his new home at Dauset Trails Nature Center in Jackson, Georgia. Just after 7:30 a.m., he stepped out of hibernation, then saw his shadow. Many people were hoping he wouldn't see his shadow, which would have meant an early spring.

Meanwhile, in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, the country's most famous groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, gave his forecast. Just like Gen. Beauregard Lee, he also saw his shadow. 

In reality, Phil's prediction is decided ahead of time by the group on Gobbler's Knob, a tiny hill just outside of Punxsutawney. That's about 65 miles northeast of Pittsburgh.

Records dating to 1887 show Phil predicting more winter 102 times while forecasting an early spring just 18 times. No records exist for the remaining years.
