Grammy-winning superstar Brandy settles into 'Star'
ATLANTA - With hits including “I Wanna Be Down,” “The Boy Is Mine,” and “Have You Ever,” Brandy quickly established herself as one of the most successful singer-songwriters of the past 25 years. Now, the Grammy-winner is taking on one of the most challenging roles of her career, playing opposite Queen Latifah in the FOX hit “Star.”
Brandy joined the cast of the Atlanta-lensed show last year in the role of the tough, streetwise Cassie (sister to Queen Latifah’s Carlotta). Says Brandy of her character, "No one knows who she is. They know what she does, they know what she's about, but no one knows who she is on the inside." It’s something of a departure for the actress and singer, who burst onto the scene in 1994 with her multi-platinum debut album, then notably took on the iconic role of Cinderella in an acclaimed television adaptation produced by and co-starring Whitney Houston. Brandy says she learned many lessons working with entertainment icons like Houston and Diana Ross (with whom she starred in the television film Double Platinum), and she’s ready to pass those lessons on to the younger stars of “Star” – if they want them.
"I think I'm ready pass them, you know what I mean?” Brandy says. “I don't want to intrude myself on anyone, but anytime anyone wants to ask me, and I've told them all, ‘Please, I've been through it all, please come to me if you need any advice or anything.’ I've told Brittany [O’Grady], ‘I've been through it all, there's nothing you can even imagine I haven't been through,’ and I told her, ‘Fame didn't kill me. I'm still here.’"
Good Day Atlanta’s Paul Milliken — a longtime Brandy fan — sat down with the actress on the Atlanta set of “Star,” and got a chance to learn more about her character’s third season storyline along with getting a tease about upcoming new music!
