Dahlonega stands out on Memorial Day. The roads of the city and Lumpkin County are lined with memorial markers for the deserving, those who have served and sacrificed in the United States military.

"They are a visual of the price of freedom," explains Paul Wingo, a retired U.S. Army Colonel. 737 names from different wars are inscribed on markers.  They grace the winding mountain roads of Dahlonega and Lumpkin County.

Wingo tells FOX 5's Kaitlyn Pratt, "Sometime you would say to yourself, 'Isn't this a little massive? Doesn't it get a little overdone?' And you say to yourself, 'How can you overdo something that's so important? When our veterans have given so much? And of course, those who gave their life in battle.'"

More than 120 volunteers have a hand in this effort each year. Where some may celebrate Memorial Day as a day off, this community wants their tribute to be a reminder to pause and reflect deeply on the loved ones now gone.

The memorial markers will remain up through July 4th.
