SWV celebrates 25 years of hits

ATLANTA - With timeless hits including “Right Here/Human Nature,” “Weak,” “You’re The One,” and “Rain,” SWV paved a path that female vocal groups continue to travel today.  Now, the trio is capping off its first 25 years with a major honor.

SWV (which stands for Sisters With Voices) burst onto the scene in 1992 with debut album It’s About Time, which showcased the soulful vocals and tight harmonies of Cheryl “Coko” Gamble, Tamara “Taj” Johnson, and Leanne “Lelee” Lyons.  The album contained several memorable songs, including the #1 hit “Weak.”  The trio returned to the top of the charts with sophomore album New Beginning and its lead single, “You’re The One,” in 1996, and followed that up with several hits from the third album Release Some Tension.  After an extended break from releasing new material, SWV returned in 2012 with I Missed Us, an album which gained the group its second Grammy nomination.  Now, 25 years after that first album, SWV is being honored with a “Lady of Soul” Award at the Soul Train Awards, which will air Sunday, November 26 on BET.
