13-year-old shot again at southeast Atlanta apartment complex

A 13-year-old boy is recovering after gunshots rang out and struck his home early Sunday morning in southeast Atlanta.

What we know:

Bullet holes hit Building C at the Capitol Vanira Apartments before 4 a.m. Sunday.

Officers responded to the complex and found the 13-year-old boy alert, conscious and breathing before medics rushed him to a local hospital.

Investigators believe someone targeted the home and fired shots from outside.

Multiple bullets pierced the windows and walls near his bed, according to his family.

What they're saying:

The victim's sister, Asia Battle, said the family ducked for cover when the shooting started.

"Everybody just got down on the ground and my mom was saying to get down to the bathroom and I laid on the floor and my little brother, we think he may have jumped up and that's how he got shot, but the bullet literally went through the wall near his bed," Battle said.

His family said he is doing well, but they do not feel comfortable returning to the residence.

Battle confirmed her brother did not face major injuries, but she emphasized that the family refuses to stay at the location.

"We're not sleeping here," Battle said. "I was still scared to even walk by the window when police showed up."

The family noted this is the second time the teenager has been shot at the complex.

Battle said her teenage brother was shot outside the same apartment complex in September.

Another brother was also shot in front of the building during the same incident last year.

Battle called for severe action regarding the property.

"I think they need to shut down these apartments," Battle said.

What we don't know:

Officers have not announced any arrests in connection with the gunfire, according to police.

Investigators have not determined what led to the shooting.
