DENTON, Texas - Denton police are trying to figure out what caused a head-on crash that left two women and their daughters dead.
The crash happened Saturday night on Fort Worth Drive. Police said a Nissan Rogue that was heading southbound crossed over into the northbound lanes. It collided head on with a Volvo XC60.
Friends and family have identified the victims on Facebook. Ashley Morgan, 26, and her 4-year-old daughter, Lorelei Cotter, were in the Nissan. Emma Shaffer, 41, and her 12-year-old daughter, Emma “Tita” Shaffer, were in the Volvo.
Tita Shaffer was a sixth grader at Liberty Christian School in Argyle. Students and faculty prayed for the accident victims and their families during assemblies at Liberty Christian on Monday.
"I walked into my mom's bedroom and she was crying so we went into the living room and they told me and I just broke down because we've been best friends for a really long time," said Janae Cook, Tita Shaffer's friend.
Liberty Christian officials said there will likely be a service at the school for the Shaffer's later in the week.
Traffic investigators still don't know why Morgan veered into oncoming traffic. Police do not believe speed or alcohol were factors.
