ATLANTA - While getting a job interview is half the battle there's still more work to do in order to hear, "We'd like to offer you a job."
First, start researching the company. How long has it been around? Who runs it? What'd the company philosophy? That done, here 3 THINGS TO DO when you get inside the door.
1. Be yourself.
Don't pretend to be someone you're not. It'll show.
2. Dress for the job.
Will you be in sales? Dress the way you'd expect to see a salesperson dress. If it's a job at a make-up counter, well your make up better look good, right?
3. Turn off that cell phone, folks.
Turn. It. Off. I was part of an interview one time and the interviewee kept looking at his phone, checking his texts. He even answered a phone call. Big no-no.
OK, with the actual interview behind you think about compensation. That's always the touchy topic. Obviously, you need to talk about it, but experts warn not to do that until they've made you an offer. But here is where you do research before the interview. Know what the going rate for your job description is in your area. Don't go in blind just guessing. You will lose; your future employer will win.
Also, practice your pitch with a friend. Do go in cold. Know exactly how you'll handle the conservation before it happens.
