33-year-old Athens woman killed when vehicle hits patch of ice, police say

A 33-year-old Athens woman is dead after her vehicle hit a patch of ice on Jan. 22, according to Athens-Clarke County Police Department.

Police responded to the incident at approximately 4:11 p.m. in the area of Danielsville Road and Harve Mathis Road. According to investigators, Kendra Sims, 33, of Athens, was driving a 2003 Chevrolet Trail Blazer when her vehicle hit a patch of ice, causing her to lose control. The SUV veered off the road and collided with a tree.

Emergency medical personnel arrived at the scene, but Sims succumbed to her injuries. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

This accident is the third fatal crash in Athens-Clarke County in 2025. Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
