Apple employee found dead at work ID'd

Authorities have released the identity of an Apple employee whose body was found at the company's corporate Silicon Valley headquarters a day before.

Law enforcement officers identified the man as Edward Thomas Mackowiak, 25. He died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said but it was not immediately clear what prompted the incident.

His identity was released a few hours after Apple released a statement about the incident.

"We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of a young and talented coworker. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies go out to his family and friends, including the many people he worked with here at Apple. We are working to support them however we can in this difficult time."

Deputies responded to a report of a person down at the Apple campus at 1 Infinite Loop around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, sheriff's Sgt. Andrea Urena said outside the company's headquarters.

Responding deputies found a man and determined he was dead, Urena said. Investigators learned the man was an employee and believe the death was an isolated incident, she said.

There are no other suspects being sought in connection with the incident. And there were no other threats to other workers at the campus or the public, she said.

Santa Clara County Sheriff Investigators said they are looking at many factors that could have led to the incident including Apple's recent stock loss.

On Tuesday, Apple made headlines when it announced its quarterly revenue dropped for the first time in more than a decade.

Apple sold more than 51.2 million iPhones in the first three months of 2016 -- while racking up $10.5 billion in quarterly profit. That was more than many analysts expected, but still fewer than the 61 million iPhones sold a year earlier.

The company is battling perceptions that its latest iPhones aren't dramatically different from previous models, as overall smartphone sales are slowing around the world.

The company's headquarters is east of North De Anza Boulevard and south of Interstate Highway 280.
