Ahead of Hurricane Florence, the Atlanta Humane Society is now taking in dogs and cats from South Carolina.

Vans filled with animals arrived at the Mansell campus in Alpharetta this morning.

The Humane Society's Animal Emergency Services team organized the transfer.

Officials told FOX 5 the Atlanta campus took in nearly a thousand shelter animals from hurricane-hit areas in 2017.

"We're taking these animals for two reasons. Obviously when storms hit there's always the potential for flooding, so we're removing the animals from that potential danger," Christina Hill with the Atlanta Humane Society said. "We're also enabling that shelter to have space after the storm so they can take in lost or displaced animals from their region."

The animals transported include dogs and cats of all ages and breeds.

Once the animals get settled, they will be up for adoption.
