ATLANTA - Residents who live, work or play near an area that does not already have parking meters in the city of Atlanta should watch out.
Atlanta is putting the private parking contract, now handled by PARKatlanta, out for bid. The terms issued by city officials includes having the bidders locate one thousand additional spaces where they can put up a meter.
The more meter boxes, the more potential revenue.
Critics in Downtown, Midtown, Virginia Highland and Buckhead are saying that enough is enough already. Those residents said they are getting tired of circling and searching for a free spot.
Intown Council Member Kwanza Hall said it is time for other sections of Atlanta to get some meters.
That could be bad news for a restaurant owner in the East Atlanta Village. Parking outside her building is free. She fears that if patrons see a change and have to plunk down $2, even more to feed a meter they won't want to come in and purchase her $5 sandwiches.
The mayor's office said there have been no decisions yet where the new meters will go. Currently, the city has 2,500 metered spots.
