ATLANTA - Atlanta Police are looking for the person they said robbed a woman at gunpoint in broad daylight.
Investigators said it happened Saturday morning while Becca Pope was walking on Elizabeth Street in the Inman Park neighborhood to meet a friend for brunch at 9:45 a.m.
“Nothing about it seemed threatening in the moment up until he pulled a gun out,” said Pope.
Pope said a car abruptly stopped and a person who did not look old enough to drive jumped out of the driver’s seat.
“He came right up to me and said ‘Give me your purse’ and I was a little confused at the moment and said ‘no,’” said Pope.
Pope said after she refused, the situation escalated very quickly.
“That is when he lifted up his sweatshirt and pulled out a gun,” said Pope.
Atlanta Police said the armed robber took off with Pope’s purse, debit cards, iPhone and ID. Investigators believe the robber took off in a Chrysler or Hyundai and turned onto North Highland Avenue. Police call it a crime of opportunity.
“Crime does not go on any particular schedule when there is an opportunity, they pounce on it,” said Officer Lukasz Sajdak with the Atlanta Police Department.
Pope is shocked that something like this happened so early in the morning, in a quiet neighborhood where there is so much foot traffic and restaurants and businesses in plain sight.
Atlanta Police said they have stepped up patrols in the area. Pope said she wants to see more of a presence.
“More foot patrols by the police especially with the Belt Line and Krog Street Market, there are a lot more people around walking and I think people know that now and can take advantage and I think that is what may have happened,” said Pope.
