Man shot by police on Sunday morning
A man was shot by an Atlanta police officer on Sunday morning near the downtown Atlanta bus station.
ATLANTA - An early morning shooting involving Atlanta police officers at the Greyhound bus station off Forsyth Street SW in Downtown Atlanta is now being investigated by the GBI.
Atlanta Police say around 4:40 a.m. Sunday, two police officers encountered an "unruly" man inside the bus station terminal. When the officers started escorting the man out of the bus terminal, the man, identified as 30-year-old Tobias Levontae Sutton of College Park, reportedly pulled out a gun from a suitcase and began firing at the officers during the incident.
One police officer returned fire, hitting Sutton once.
The man was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital and is reportedly in stable condition.
The police officers were not injured.
Travelers waiting on a bus headed to Savannah recalled the scary moments they heard gunshots just a few feet away.
"I was actually scared that I was going to get hit by bullets. I was really thinking I was in danger," said witness Mason Kennedy. "We were waiting in the bus station, and this guy started causing a scene, and officer tried to get him to go outside, and remove him."
Kennedy says within moments of seeing officers confronting Sutton, he and other passengers were startled at the sound of shots fired.
"When the first shot went off, we all jumped to the ground. I was pretty scared. When we continued to hear more go off. We were all pretty scared because it was like maybe 10 feet away from the window it was really close…we were scared it was going to fly through the window," Kennedy said.
GBI crime scene investigators spent hours gathering evidence and processing the scene.
While Kennedy said he is glad no one was killed, he is also still processing what happened.
It was not immediately clear if Sutton will face any charges.
