ATLANTA - A legal battle is setting up between the city of Atlanta and disability activists.
Monday, attorneys announced a class action lawsuit against the city for failure to follow regulations under the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Specifically, it said the poor condition of Atlanta’s sidewalks and crosswalks has effectively denied wheelchair users equal access to the city.
They also said the city has failed to set up a dedicated system for disabled residents to report sidewalk and crosswalk problems which they agreed to do in 2009.
The city of Atlanta responded to the suit, saying they are committed to making Atlanta's streets more accessible.
The city also said it has not violated any agreements.
The statement reads, in part:
"In 2009, the city entered into an agreement with DOJ that was designed to address certain deficiencies...The city is not in violation of the agreement, as it is ongoing...And the city continues to address the identified needs."
