Atlanta Winter Storm: How to safely heat your home
ATLANTA - A winter storm threatens to bring a mix of snow, ice and freezing temperatures to metro Atlanta. Atlanta Fire Rescue says danger can accompany those conditions, especially when you are trying to keep your home warm.
"The first thing is, if you’re operating a space heater please check for frayed or damage to the plug. Make sure it is in a wall outlet," explained Public Information Officer Anare Holmes. "Please do not use an extension cord and then when you operate it, please keep anything from the heat source about three feet away from it."
How to prep for winter weather:1. Locate your main water shutoff2. Open faucets to drip slowly3. Ensure fireplace, wood stoves and electric heaters are working
Holmes says this is also a good time to perform battery checks on important home devices.
"We recommend people check their smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector at least once a month. Make sure they’re good, make sure they’re in operable condition," said Holmes.
He adds that accidents can still happen, and fast, so preparation is key.
"We also recommend people practice a two-minute plan, just in case anything happens, a fire rescue plan," stated Holmes. "So people know what doors to exit, they know a gameplan."
The City of Atlanta has put together a "Winter Weather Preparedness Guide and Checklist." You can check it out here.
