Atlanta winter storm: No rock salt or ice melt? Other methods for deicing

ATLANTA - Ice and snow are on the way with this winter storm. Stores across metro Atlanta are having a hard time keeping rock salt and ice melt on the shelves. Many are trying to find alternatives to help prevent ice accumulation on driveways and sidewalks. 

GET THE LATEST ON THIS WINTER STORM

Here are some alternatives we have found:

1. Water Softener Salt: Composed of sodium chloride or potassium chloride, water softener salt functions similarly to rock salt in melting ice. It's often more readily available and cost-effective. Some people also use rock salt intended for ice cream or Epsom salt.
2. Sand: While sand doesn't melt ice, it provides traction on slippery surfaces, reducing the risk of slips and falls. Opt for brick sand, which is more granular and effective for this purpose.
3. Baking Soda Solution: A mixture of baking soda and warm water can help de-ice surfaces. Combine 100g of baking soda with 4.5 liters of warm water, then apply to the icy area. This method is gentle on concrete and safe for plants and pets.
4. Vinegar Solution: Mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle and apply to icy spots. The acetic acid lowers the freezing point of water, aiding in ice melting. Use sparingly, as excessive vinegar can affect surrounding vegetation.
5. Beet Juice Mixture: Beet juice can lower the freezing temperature of water, making it an environmentally friendly de-icing solution that won't harm your driveway or nearby plants. Blend beetroot with water and apply the mixture to the icy surface.
6. Mats and Tarps: Some people will cover surfaces during the storm to help clear the accumulation from the area quickly.

As with any deicing method, use caution and common sense.
