Atlanta winter weather: How to ensure your pets stay warm and safe
ATLANTA - With a winter storm expected to hit Georgia by the end of the week, experts are urging pet owners to take steps now to protect their animals from the harsh conditions.
THE LATEST ON THIS WINTER STORM
- Bring pets indoors: Pets should not be left outside during snowstorms or extreme cold. Short-haired or smaller dogs may benefit from wearing sweaters or jackets during walks to maintain body heat.
- Protect paws: After outdoor excursions, wipe your dog's paws and belly with a moist cloth to remove snow-melting salts, as these substances can cause irritation or illness if ingested. Check for clumps of snow between toes, as they can lead to discomfort.
- Stock up on supplies: Ensure you have at least a week's supply of pet food and necessary medications, as winter storms can disrupt access to stores and veterinary services.
- Ensure proper identification: Make sure all pets wear ID tags with up-to-date contact information. Microchipping provides a permanent form of identification in case collars or tags are lost.
- Prepare an emergency kit: Prepare a pet emergency kit that includes vaccination records, recent blood work, and microchip information. These documents may be required when bringing animals to evacuation shelters.
- Limit exposure: During extreme cold, limit your pet's outdoor time. Walk dogs during the warmest part of the day, typically between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., and consider shorter, more frequent walks.
- Provide shelter for livestock: Livestock should have access to sheltered areas to protect them from wind and cold. Adequate food and unfrozen water are essential, as dehydration is a leading cause of death during winter storms.
- Monitor for signs of cold stress: Watch for signs such as shivering, lethargy, or reluctance to move. If any of these symptoms occur, bring your pet indoors immediately and consult a veterinarian if needed.
