ATLANTA - The Georgia State Patrol released audio of the conversations between troopers and dispatch Wednesday during a high speed chase which ended in death.
The DVD audio file ran nearly half an hour long.
In the first two minutes a GSP trooper, presumably Trooper Jacob Fields who was injured in the incident, is heard calmly describing a driver refusing to stop in the southbound land of Interstate 75 near Chastain Road.
Trooper: In and out of traffic, failure to maintain lanes, southbound Barrett Parkway.
Dispatch: 10-4...in and out of traffic, failure to maintain lane.
Trooper: Speed to 98 right now.
A few miles further south other troopers join in to force the Silverado truck to a stop.
Trooper: He's on the cellphone with somebody. I can't tell, somebody get in front of him. We can box him in.
Minutes later the GSP says the fleeing truck hit a car from behind new Delk Road. The crash stopped the truck. The suspect identified as 26 year old Israel Rodriguez of Acworth came out firing.
Trooper: Shots fired, shots fired.
Dispatch: 10-4 shots fired, shots fired.
About twenty seconds later dispatch is told of the injured officer.
Trooper: We have a trooper down, trooper down.
Dispatch: 10-4 you advise 10-52...10-18, trooper down.
10-52, 10-18 is police code for send an ambulance quickly. Three were dispatched. One for the woman injured in the car, though not seriously according to GSP. The second ambulance for the suspect, Israel Rodriguez who was injured from exchange of gunfire with three troopers. He later died. The third ambulance was for Trooper Fields referred to as 274 in the audio, who was already talking about what happened.
Dispatch: Can you advise status of 274?
Trooper: He's conscious. He's breathing.
Dispatch: 10-4, advise 274 status, conscious, just in pain.
The Georgia State Patrol has not when exactly Trooper Fields will be released from the hospital. He's recovering from two gunshot wounds, one to the leg, the other to the abdomen.
All the troopers involvled in the shooting are on paid adminstrative leave, waiting for the results of an independent investigation from the GBI.
