PLAINS, Ga. - In a tribute to the Carters’ legacy, the post office in Plains, Georgia, is being renamed the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Post Office. President Joe Biden signed H.R. 9600 into law over the weekend, authorizing the renaming of the post office at 119 Main Street in the Carters' hometown.

The effort to rename the location was spearheaded by Georgia’s Congressional Delegation, including Rep. Sanford D. Bishop Jr. and Senators Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock.
"Renaming the post office in Plains, Georgia, in honor of President Jimmy Carter and First Lady Rosalynn Carter is a tribute to their lifelong service," said Sen. Ossoff in December, prior to Jimmy Carter's passing. "The Carters have left an indelible mark on our nation and the world. A post office named in their honor in Plains is a small but fitting tribute to their legacy."
Sen. Warnock shared similar sentiments, stating, "Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter led exemplary lives while serving Georgians and our nation and were fiercely committed to uplifting the lives of all Americans. Renaming the Plains post office after both of these Georgia icons is a small nod to their triumphant legacy in the Peach State."
Jimmy Carter, who passed away in Plains at the age of 100 on Dec. 29, is currently lying in repose at The Carter Center in Atlanta. His journey will continue on Jan. 7, when his body is transported to Washington, D.C., for a state funeral on Jan. 9.
Afterward, Carter’s body will return to Georgia for a private farewell service at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains. He will be laid to rest beside Rosalynn Carter, his beloved wife of 77 years, who passed away on Nov. 19, 2023.
