Shamsud-Din Bahar Jabbar: Bourbon Street attack suspect identified

The man identified as the driver in the deadly attack on Bourbon Street in New Orleans on Wednesday morning was a graduate of Georgia State University, according to school officials.

Shamsud-Din Bahar Jabbar, a 42-year-old resident of Houston, Texas, attended GSU from 2015 to 2017 and graduated with a B.B.A. in Computer Information Systems. Georgia State University has seven campuses throughout metro Atlanta with more than 50,000 students.

At least 15 people were killed and 35 injured when the suspect drove a rented truck into a large crowd gathered to celebrate the New Year on Bourbon Street. He then engaged New Orleans police in a gunfight and was ultimately killed by officers. Two officers were injured during the exchange.

A photo circulated among law enforcement officials showed a bearded Jabbar wearing camouflage next to the truck after he was killed by police.

Police Commissioner Anne Kirkpatrick stated that the driver was "hell-bent on creating the carnage and the damage that he did" and attempted "to run over as many people as he could."

Shamsud-Din Bahar Jabbar lived in Georgia

According to DeKalb County court records, Jabbar was married in September 2013 and filed for divorce in DeKalb County in May 2016. During that time, records indicate he was living in a Clarkston apartment complex. Multiple other addresses were also associated with Jabbar.

Court records from Cobb County show that Jabbar sold a property on Horseshoe Creek Drive in Marietta. Neighbors tell FOX 5 that Jabbar was the landlord of the home.

Jabbar's military service

According to the FBI, he is a U.S.-born citizen from Texas and an Army veteran.

FOX News has confirmed Shamsud-Din Bahar Jabbar was in the regular Army as a Human Resource Specialist (42A) and Information Technology (IT) Specialist (25B) from March 2007 until January 2015.

He would go on to serve in the Army Reserve as an IT Specialist (25B) from January 2015 until July 2020.

He deployed to Afghanistan from February 2009 to January 2010.

He held the rank of Staff Sergeant at the end of service.

"Here's what we know so far, the FBI has reported to me the killer was an American citizen," President Joe Biden said at a news conference on Wednesday. "Born in Texas. He served active duty in the Army for many years. He also served in the Army Reserves until a few years ago."

Did not act alone

Investigators believe Jabbar did not act alone and are asking the public to provide any information about the incident or Jabbar's possible accomplices. They believe there could be several other people involved. 

The FBI, which is leading the investigation, reported that an Islamic State group flag was recovered from Jabbar’s vehicle, along with weapons and a potential IED. Additional IEDs were reportedly found in the French Quarter.

No significant criminal history

According to Newsweek, Jabbar was charged with misdemeanor theft in 2002 and driving with a suspended license in 2005. He was registered as a Democrat in North Carolina in 2012 but had no party affiliation on his Texas voter registration.

Jabbar was reportedly employed by The Middas Group and worked as a property manager at Blue Meadow Properties. He was also a military veteran and had been married twice, with multiple children, according to Newsweek.
