FLOYD COUNTY, Ga. - Bullets fly outside the gate of an airshow. Thousands of people were heading home after the Wings Over North Georgia show Sunday when they heard gunshots.
Floyd County Police are calling it a severe case of road rage. Officers said 73-year-old Jerome Benesh was armed and angry when he showed up for the airshow and the show was over.
"He was upset that he did not get into the airshow and when you have tens of thousands of people leaving at one time, traffic was clogged and that made him more angry, and apparently that was all he could take," said Lt. Daniel Pendley.
Joel Wigley was in a car just feet from Benesh.
"I heard the gunshots and knew it was behind us and very close," said Wigley.
He said he saw him speed off down the road on the opposite side, almost hitting some guys on motorcycles.
Police caught up with Benesh near Highway 140 and Highway 53. Officers found two guns and boxes of ammo in his car.
"During the tirade, Mr. Benesh did wave his gun at other vehicles, he did shoot at other vehicles," said Lt. Pendley.
Jimmy Singh was working at a convenience store just down the street. He said people started panicking, cars were cutting through the parking lot of the store, people were running in the store.
"I've never seen anything like that. I told them as long as you're in here with mem, you're safe, I got one under the counter too," said Singh.
