Burgers with Buck: The Flying Machine
GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. - For all of the negative stories we hear about social, every once in a while it’s nice to hear about how it can be used properly. That’s the case for The Flying Machine restaurant at the Gwinnett County Airport at Briscoe Field.
When new rules were enacted at the regional airport that restricted the height and usage of signage on the property, business at the 20-year-old Lawrenceville restaurant suffered.
“It almost put us out of business”, said The Flying Machine owner Hokey Sloan. “We’re on a dead end road here at the airport and it’s impossible to run a restaurant business dependent on the general public with no signage out there on that main road, and that’s what we’ve been up against.”
So Sloan put out an appeal on the restaurant’s Facebook page to let potential customers know his plight, and it obviously resonated with the general public. More than 1,400 shares, more than 250 ‘likes’, and many, many comments later, The Flying Machine is slowly recovering and this, along with a delicious burger, caught the attention of the #BurgersWithBuck staff.
The burger is called the $100 Burger, named after an old pilot/airport joke about how much it costs to fly in to get some food. According to Sloan, it would probably be more accurate to call it a $250 Burger. In reality though, the $100 Hamburger costs less than $9.00, and it comes in many varieties. #BWB featured the mushroom and Swiss version which was a pretty darn, good choice.
Another cool fact about The Flying Machine, it’s also a great place to enjoy live and local entertainment. In fact, Hokey himself does a mean Waylon Jennings, and along with his buddy Casey Ferguson as Willie Nelson, they have been known to perform that they call, ‘The True Outlaw Tribute’.
