California closer to banning cosmetics testing on animals
OAKLAND, Calif. (KTVU and Fox News) - California could become the first state in the country to formally ban the testing of cosmetic products on animals.
The bill introduced by Sen. Cathleen Galigiana (D-Stockton), called the California Cruelty-Free Cosmetics Act, would make it illegal for any cosmetic manufacturer to "knowingly import or sell any cosmetic, including personal hygiene products such as deodorant, shampoo or conditioner in California, if the final product or any component of the product was tested on animals after Jan. 1, 2020.”
There would be an initial fine of $5,000 and an additional fine of $1,000 for each day the fine continues.
Lawmakers passed the bill Friday night, and it's awaiting Governor Jerry Brown's signature.
The bill covers products including lipstick, shampoo and deodorant.
Supporters of the bill say its passage could fast-track cruelty-free policies as the universal standard for all beauty products produced in America.
