Car break-in suspects arrested after high-speed chase into Cobb County

The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office is investigating a number of thefts in the Towne Lake Hills South community in Woodstock.

Home surveillance captured footage of strangers walking up and down driveways, opening car doors early Monday morning.

The backstory:

Josh Peeples' fiancée's car was rifled through. "She feels violated. Someone went through her personal stuff," said Peeples. Investigators say a computer, tools, credit cards, and cash were stolen from about a dozen cars. In one case, an entire vehicle, a Nissan Frontier, was stolen.

Timeline:

Cherokee County Sheriff’s investigators responded to the area around 6 a.m. on Monday.

Just hours after their investigation was launched into the thefts, the stolen truck was spotted almost 30 miles away in Cobb County. "An officer tried to initiate a traffic stop on the East West Connector," said Cobb County Police Officer Aaron Wilson.

Cobb County Police say the driver made a U-turn and took off. "One patrol car tried to get in front of the driver to box him in. He split between the two patrol vehicles, then turned back onto Austell Road, where he initiated a high rate of speed," said Officer Wilson.

Police say the driver hit two cars and ended up crashing. All four people in the vehicle bailed out and took off running. "A short foot-chase ensued through the woods," said Officer Wilson.

A perimeter was set up, a police K-9 went to work, and all were caught.

What we know:

Police say 19-year-old Zackery Brown was behind the wheel. He is now in the Cobb County jail on a number of charges, including fleeing, theft, and hit-and-run. He will also face charges in Cherokee County.

What we don't know:

Brown's next court date was not immediately known.

It was not clear if he had retained legal representation.

What they're saying:

Police say this is a good example of teamwork among law enforcement agencies. "Officers were alerted to a crime that happened in Cherokee County, and the offender was here in Cobb County. If we're able to apprehend them and bring them into custody and take them back over to Cherokee County, we're going to do everything we can to make that happen," said Officer Wilson.
