DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. - The sheriff of DeKalb County takes in tens of thousands of dollars belonging to inmates. That cash can be used to purchase food beyond the meals provided by the county.
A candidate for the office held by Jeffrey Mann claims there is no accountability for these funds. Without going into specifics, Michael Williams, a law enforcement veteran, suggests taxpayers have no idea how much money is in the account, and how much goes out. That is because it is the one account that the county finance department does not independently examine.
Mann calls the claims "silly" but not unexpected as a challenger for his post seeks attention. The DeKalb Sheriff said he voluntarily brought on an auditor to check the inmate account, and anyone who wants to seek the books can come down to the sheriff's office and look at them.
