GEORGIA - It was a big weekend for Special Olympics Georgia.
Three thousand athletes came together to compete in the 2017 Summer Games at Emory University.
From swimming to volleyball to gymnastics and flag football, the athletes shined bright at the 29th annual event. The games provide a space for adults and children with intellectual disabilities to participate in the competitions.
But organizers say, for many of the athletes, it's more than a place to compete.
"It's just a time where they can celebrate them being them without focusing on their disability," said Meghan Daves, Special Olympics Georgia Communications and Marketing Manager. "This just gives them an arena or a field to showcase how great of an athlete they are and that they're just as much of a person as everyone else."
Special Olympics does provide year-round sports training for their athletes. For more information, visit http://www.specialolympicsga.org/.
Congrats to all the champions who participated in the Special Olympics 2017 Georgia State Summer Games!
