Charlotte Nash won't seek re-election as Gwinnett County chairwoman
GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. (FOX 5 Atlanta) - Charlotte Nash said Tuesday that she will not seek re-election as chairwoman of the Gwinnett County Commission in 2020.
Nash won a special election to lead the board in 2011 and then was re-elected in 2012 and 2016. She had worked in Gwinnett County government for nearly three decades before retiring in 2004.
“I have mixed emotions as I announce that I have decided that I will not seek re-election,” Nash said in a written statement. “I believe that it is time for me to focus on my family and to follow through on a promise I made to my husband that we will enjoy retirement together.”
Nash, a Republican, has been a strong advocate for mass transit. She played a key role in negotiations to expand MARTA service to Gwinnett County, but voters nixed that idea in a March referendum.
“For four decades, I have enjoyed the opportunity to serve, in one role or another, the place I have called home all my life,” she wrote. “I know that I have been fortunate in that. To all those who have supported and helped me along the way, I say thank you.”
Nash is a Gwinnett County native, and she graduated from Dacula High School and the University of Georgia.
