70-year-old accused of murdering wife at home

Charles Collins, 70, is behind bars tonight, accused of murdering his wife inside their own home. It happened overnight in the 400 block of Raven Drive in unincorporated Cherokee County.

The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office says Charles Collins shot and killed 63-year-old Deborah Collins. The sheriff’s office says Collins confronted investigators with a gun then darted back inside his home. Officers arrested him a short time later. They say they found Deborah’s body on the floor with at least one gunshot wound. The motive is unclear.

Neighbors are struggling to understand how this could happen in their community

Jenifer Meyers saw the signs of trouble right across the street. "We know thing had been going on," Meyers said. "There’s been police activity over there in the last few months."

But she had no idea her neighbor would be accused of doing the unthinkable. "It’s always disturbing when you hear that somebody doesn’t value somebody else’s life," Meyers said.

Matthew Connolly lives down the street. He couldn’t believe it when FOX 5 told him the news.

"Very surprised. This is a very quiet town, quiet neighborhood," Connolly said.

Collins is being held without bond at the Cherokee County jail. He’s charged with felony murder, malice murder, aggravated assault and aggravated battery.
