6-year-old finds guns, accidentally shoots self

In the wake of a recent string of shootings, the Atlanta Police Department is urging gun owners to make sure their weapons are secure.

Police are investigating the shooting of a 6-year-old boy Wednesday night in southwest Atlanta.

Officials say at around 10:45 p.m. Wednesday, officers were called to the 1000 block of Smith Street after reports of a person shot.

At the scene, officers found a 6-year-old boy with a gunshot wound to his hand.

Medics transported the child to a nearby hospital in stable condition.

Investigators believe the gunshot wound was self-inflicted. 

According to officials, the child's 82-year-old grandmother was in the home and is cooperating in the investigation.
