Clayton Co. Sheriff Victor Hill Indicted
GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. - Clayton County Sheriff Victor Hill pleaded his case Thursday. Hill tried to explain to a Gwinnett County Grand Jury that the May shooting of his dear friend Gwenevere McCord was an accident that should not have criminal consequences.
Clayton County’s top cop read a prepared statement, re-enacted the shooting, and even took questions from grand jurors during the hour and a half that the panel spent on his case.
"He testified, he answered the questions. He demonstrated how his recollection of the event took place. We provided him with a training weapon to do that. He was neither nervous or arrogant,” said Gwinnett County District Attorney Danny Porter.
The sheriff didn't answer any of questions from the media Thursday. The Porter said Hill and McCord have the same explanation. They both said the lawman was practicing police tactics with McCord when the shooting happened at this model home where McCord worked as a real estate agent.
"It has been his contention since the first 9-1-1 call that it was an accident and that was consistent with what he testified to today," Porter said.
Medics rushed the 20-year Clayton County resident to the hospital where she was initially in critical condition. A picture on Hill's Facebook page indicates McCord is doing much better. She apparently stopped by his office to say “hi” back in July. But the sheriff who took an oath to protect and serve, now has a lot to lose if he is convicted of the misdemeanor reckless conduct charge
"If POST elected to, they could take his certification upon conviction. I don't think they are require to like it would be for a felony," Porter concluded.
