Clayton County officer charged after fight with student

A Clayton County police officer has been criminally charged for his involvement in a physical altercation with a student in Rex, Georgia.

Sergeant Kevin Hughes is charged with battery, false imprisonment and cruelty to children.

Police would not tell FOX 5 a motive for the alleged crime, but did state the juvenile was not his son.

FOX 5 learned details on the allegations from warrants; the court documents state the ordeal happened on the morning of September 23, at the home of Hughes' family friend.

The warrant states the victim was a 15-year-old teenage boy, who reported to authorities that Hughes went into his bedroom, beat him, handcuffed him, and left him on the floor of his bedroom. Court documents further state the teenager had injuries to his eye, wrists and neck, and sought treatment later that day from a school nurse.

A press release from the Clayton County Police Department said school officials reported the alleged incident to police.

The release also stated that investigators and members of the Department of Family and Children Services conducted an investigation, including interviews with the juvenile and family members who were present when the alleged incident occurred. Police said physical evidence was also taken into custody.

Following the investigation, warrants were issued for Hughes's arrest.

Hughes has been placed on unpaid administrative leave.

Police said there is an internal investigation into Hughes.
