College Park Police are getting ahead of the crime, scooping out parking lots, hotels and keeping an eye out for any suspicious activity. They've developed an auto theft detail, targeting thrives before they target victims.

"The team consists of people from the patrol division, special operations and the detective division," said Master Sergeant Jeff Hightower with College Park Police. "Working together they have been able to catch a couple of people in the act of breaking into cars so we are showing success.”

College Park Police Chief Keith Meadows told FOX 5's Nathalie Pozo that the number of car break-ins have dropped significantly since launching this new initiative a month ago.

"Over the last two months we have had anywhere between 20-30 break-ins per week," said Chief Meadows. "We do not have the final numbers just yet, but since we have our initiative in place we have seen a sharp decrease, now seeing four to five per week.”
