Police in Colorado said they're looking for the person who threw a dog out the car window while driving, breaking the animal's spine.

Commerce City Police said the tragedy happened November 23. Officers were told the dog had been tossed out the passenger side window.

Authorities said a good Samaritan saw what happened and tried to help the dog before first responders arrived. When first responders arrived, they transported him to an emergency veterinarian.

Due to his broken spine, the dog was said to be in "tremendous pain and unable to move" before having to be euthanized.

Police later said they were contacted by the dog's owner, who said the dog was left the backyard when the owner stepped out but had disappeared before the owner returned.

Authorities said the person or people responsible for the incident would be charged with aggravated animal cruelty charges.
