The Pike County High School head football coach says the game video does not reveal what happened to a football player who died after an injury Friday night.

Dylan Thomas, an eleventh-grade football player passed away Sunday evening after sustaining a head injury during a varsity football game on Friday.

Head football coach Brad Webber tells FOX 5 News after he and several of the coaches repeatedly reviewed the game video, there’s no obvious tackle or collision in which Thomas was involved.

“We just don’t know exactly when it happened. As we can tell right now he was not involved in a tackle,” Coach Webber confirmed.

Webber says Dylan initially described himself as having a leg injury, but Grady Memorial Hospital doctors describe it as a head injury.

The injury happened during the third quarter. The Pike County Schools superintendent says the referee stopped play, an athletic trainer was called to the field, then Dylan was brought to the sideline, and he was communicating.

“He was coherent, he was able to speak, talking with the athletic trainer. When he came to the sideline he was having communication with the team doctor, athletic trainer,” the coach remarked.

Medics rushed Dylan to Grady Memorial Hospital where he had emergency surgery but died Sunday.

The death is the first Coach Webber has experienced during his 30 years on the gridiron.

Students were expected to gather at Christ Chapel Church in Pike county to support each other.

The superintendent said funeral arrangements are incomplete.
