Confederate monument being removed from downtown Athens

A monument of a Confederate soldier is being removed from downtown Athens.

The memorial stands along East Broad Street, which will be closed from Pulaski to Thomas Street for several days. Detours are taking place from 9 p.m. until 6 a.m. while crews work to remove the monument.

The city plans to reconstruct and expand the crosswalk at the intersection by five feet. It's a popular area for UGA students.
