Consulate General of Honduras shooting: Suspected gunman's identity revealed

A suspect is in custody following the deadly shooting of a security guard at the Honduras Consulate in Doraville on Monday afternoon.

Authorities identified the suspect as 29-year-old Jose Emanuel Olmo Rosado. He was arrested shortly after the shooting at a nearby QuikTrip gas station and now faces charges of felony murder and two counts of aggravated assault.

The victim, 45-year-old Jesus Guillermo Loera Urias, was a security guard at the consulate and is being hailed as a hero for shutting the door to protect others, just moments before he was shot. According to the Doraville Police Department, the altercation began when Olmo Rosado reportedly attempted to enter the consulate with a firearm, leading to a confrontation with Loera.

According to police, the incident escalated from a verbal dispute into physical violence. Witnesses said Loera deployed pepper spray to deter the armed man, who then opened fire. Loera suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. A second victim, Kevin Rolando Velasquez Flores, was also shot and sustained a leg injury. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Police located Olmo Rosado within minutes of the shooting and took him into custody without incident. Surveillance footage and evidence recovered from the scene, including shell casings and a live round, are part of the ongoing investigation.

The U.S. Department of State condemned the attack, stating, "Attacks and threats against diplomatic facilities are unacceptable."

Loera, a Mexican national described by friends as "jolly and caring," was remembered for his bravery and dedication. Emerita Vasquez, a close friend, said, "He was really kind and sweet... a truly wonderful man, always helpful and never in a bad mood."

The consulate was closed on Tuesday in honor of Loera, and mourners gathered outside to leave flowers and candles at the scene. "You know someone for a while, and the next thing you know, they’re not here. It just breaks your heart," Vasquez said.

Olmo Rosado remains in custody at the DeKalb County Jail as the investigation continues.
